The Kids Don't Stand a Chance

They took you away on a Monday
Flumes of flames cluttered the sky
Drops of snow fluttered as your soul left your body
Promises unmade as time told it's truth
Hands unclasped in the open eyes as our lives burned down
Streets renamed
Sheets changed as the year capped and the hurricanes fossilized your memory
Comforts of being the way we were as love forms it's plaster casts
Honor, and gatekeepers arrive right on time as the slow drip just allows the tides of time sever your face from the catacombs as it steadily rises from it's grave.
Graveyard boys and girls drift in nightly duets on swing sets perched in moonlight
Mom and Dad the strong foundations of faith as the children syncopate the songs that escape the ironies of youth.
Flowers lay in the open caskets
The memories bottled up and aged in new skins
Toast to the friends we had
Toast the friends we always have
